The mystery of Lake San Roque, what animal did they confuse with a carpincho? • Channel c

In recent days, neighbors and tourists from Villa Carlos Paz began to share photographs and videos of what seemed to be carpinchos in the waters of Lake San Roque. The images quickly went viral on social networks, generating curiosity and debate. However, experts clarified that it is not about Capinchos, but of Coipos, a species also known as “otter” either “false otter“

Coipo (Myocastor Coypus) is a semi -native rodent originally from South America, similar to the beaver, which usually lives in rivers, lagoons and wetlands. Unlike the carpinchos, which are larger and have a more robust appearance, the coypes are smaller and are characterized by their long and squamous tail.

Why confuse them?
The confusion between both species is common, since they share similar habitats and have aquatic behaviors. However, the coypes are more frequent in the Córdoba region, while the carpinchos are usually found in areas such as the estuaries of the Iberá or the Argentine coast.
Specialists explained that the presence of Coipos in Lake San Roque is not new, but its sighting has become more frequent due to the increase in tourist activity in the area and the most attention given to these animals on social networks.

Tourism and nature in Carlos Paz
This phenomenon has generated interest among the visitors of Villa Carlos Paz, who now seek to see these curious animals during their walks along the waterfront. However, experts recommend maintaining a prudent distance and not feeding them, since this could alter their natural behavior and affect their health.
