The mystery of the bones without a coffin in Langreo
Tuesday, January 21, 2025, 8:17 p.m.
A family in Langreo received a tremendous scare when on March 27, 2024 they went to the exhumation of the body of PGC, who died on August 24, 1972 and was buried in niche 12, battery 10, façade … D from the Pando cemetery, in La Felguera. During the operation inside the niche, “only a plastic bag with cadaveric remains was found, and not the coffin in which he was buried at the time.” Something surprising.
The family confirmed to the City Council that “they had never requested the exhumation” and requested proof that “the remains found are those of their relative.” The cemetery service tried to provide a solution but “there is no documentation after the date of burial, neither on its own initiative, nor at the request of the family, and the error could have occurred due to the confusing numbering of the niches, or in the years in which management was external and for which there are no records.
Given the impossibility of meeting the family’s request with its own resources, the City Council has had to tender and award by mayoral decree, a service for anthropological-forensic study and DNA analysis of the bone remains located, which will involve an outlay of 3,685 euros.
