The “secret” displacements of the nuns of Belorado until finding “affection and spirituality” in Arriondas

On May 13, 2024, feast of Our Lady of Fatima, the community of Clarisas de Belorado nuns publicly announced its separation from the Holy See, which a month later proceeded to excommunicate the religious. That schism explains why of the closing restaurant that will open in Arriondas in an imminent way. Because from that break with the Catholic Church, the need to find new ways of obtaining economic income arises, once the archbishopric of Burgos has ordered his eviction from the convent where they have their home and a workshop that allowed them to be self -sufficient.

One of those alternative livelihoods have been found in Arriondas, specifically at the Ribera del Chicu hotel, a three stars of nine rooms that have been closed for some time and that the nuns will rent for 1,600 euros per month. In the property, which is located at the foot of the Sierra del Sueve, about 400 meters from the center of Arriondas and ten minutes by Covadonga car, this same week has been installed this week -one of the trusted people of the Abadesa of Belorodo-, Sor Myryam and Sor Alma. They will be in charge of launching the new restaurant.

But why Asturias and how have they gone to Arriondas? Spokesmen of the religious community, who are still considered monjas and clear, although the ecclesiastical authorities insist that they are no longer, they explain that “they have been looking for a site for a restaurant” and, in that search, “they considered different sites of the country” . As the Principality: «When they visited the east of Asturias, they said ‘this is the place’ and they no longer looked at anymore. They captivated the spirituality they found there and the love of the people ».

The excommunicated nuns of Belorado are closing, but that does not prevent them from abandoning their retirement when necessary, in addition to having a lawyer and press manager, who advise them in their legal and media transfers. In one of his “secret outputs” to Asturias, to find a place to settle, “it was the neighbors themselves who told them that the Ribera del Chicu hotel was empty and its owners were a retired marriage,” with which it closed An agreement “recently.”

The religious community insists on “the good reception of the neighbors”, which, according to their spokesmen, “it is appreciated taking into account that, during all this time, they have been very mistreated.” They refer to the tensions that during this last year have starred with the archbishopric of Burgos and the Holy See for background and form disagreements. To begin with, the rebel sisters of the Convent of Belorado do not recognize papal authority from Pius XII onwards. Nor the authority of the Burgos Bishop on the properties that the Claries have been occupying for centuries.

Discrepancies on real estate matters

At present, four judgments have pending and the four are motivated by real estate matters, related to the eviction of Belorado and the sale of the Monastery of Derio – where they say they have felt the presence of the demon – for the acquisition of the monastery of Orduña. Operation that was not consumed, because the Church has removed the necessary powers. Today, “they do not let them sell their famous sweets and chocolates,” one of their main sources of income.

Hence they have decided to set up a restaurant: «They need income, like any family and they are very entrepreneurs. The restaurant will open shortly, not to give time to the church machinery to which the project boycott, ”says their representatives. It will be a “homemade and traditional” food business, where their sweets will also put on sale. Sor Sión, Sor Myryam and Sor Alma will not be facing the public, but at the head of the kitchen, although “they do not rule out to be seen promptly” aware that they are the true claim of this new hospitality business.
