For years, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were the most beloved duo of Disney Channel. They met since childhood in the Barney & Friends children’s program and, while they grew up, their friendship was strengthened in front of the eyes of the world. But as many relationships in the entertainment industry, yours was changing over time.
From “One and The Same” to opposite roads
The beginning of an iconic friendship
The connection between Selena and Demi was instantaneous. They were girls when they met on the set of Barney In 2002, and quickly became better friends. Together they crossed castings, auditions and eventually triumphed in Disney Channel.
While Selena starred WAVERLY PLACE SorcerersDemi earned the public’s affection in Camp Rock and Sunny between stars. They also shared together projects, such as the movie Princess Protection Program In 2009, which today is pure nostalgia material.
And how to forget that they launched the single “One and the Same”, which became a hymn for those who grew up with them.
In social networks and interviews, they always spoke with each other pride. They made videos together, they sang, they laughed … it seemed like a friendship unwavering.
What happened between them?
But over time, the differences began to notice. One of the most commented moments was in 2010 when Demi was questioned about Selena and responded sharply: “Ask Taylor”, referring to the then close relationship between Selena and Taylor Swift. Many interpreted this as a sign of jealousy or distancing.
There were also public ups and downs related to Demi’s personal struggles. While she dealt with mental health problems and addictions, Selena seemed more focused on her musical career and her friends with other circles, such as Taylor. Although Selena showed support publicly on several occasions, Demi showed in interviews that she felt that many friendships had been superficial.
In 2017, Demi launches his documentary Simply Complicatedin which he confessed to feel alone and betrayed by nearby people, although he did not directly mention Selena. It was until April 2020 in an interview, where Demi was clear:
“When you are young and you grow with someone, you will always have love for that person. But we are not friends”
It was the first time that one of the two publicly confirmed that the relationship no longer existed. That same year, Selena published a message of support after the emotional presentation of Demi with her song “Anyone” in the Grammys. Although Demi thanked the gesture in interviews, he also commented that he felt that this kind of support was sometimes not as genuine as it seemed.
Everything indicates that both have closed that chapter with maturity, but without intention to reconcile.
And what does this story leave us?
It makes it clear that both took very different paths. Although their friendship no longer exists as before, what they lived marked a whole generation. And that is not erased. They taught us that growing also implies going, that not all friendships last forever, and that it is fine to take different paths if that means being better.
They may no longer be “delena”, but the love (even from afar) is still noticeable. And that is also valuable.
