The United States bombs EI positions in Somalia – DW – 02/01/2025
United States Military Forces carried out air attacks against objectives of the Islamic State (EI) in Somalia, announced this Saturday (01.02.2025) President Donald Trump. “This morning I ordered precision military air attacks against the main planning planner of ISIS attacks (acronym of the EI) and other terrorists who recruited and directed in Somalia,” Trump wrote on his social truth platform.
“The bombings destroyed the caves in which they live and killed many terrorists without, in any way, to hurt civilians,” he added.
His Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegesh, explained that the attacks, made by the United States command in Africa, aimed at Ei-Somaly groups in the Golis mountains, in the semi-autonomous region of Puntlandia. “Our initial evaluation is that several militants died in air attacks and no civilian was injured,” Hegseth said in a statement.
Local military officers confirmed to the AFP agency the attacks. “We do not know so far the number of victims, but we believe that the missiles accurately reached the objectives,” Mohamed Ali, a commander in the Bossaso area, said on the phone. “We believe there are victims among terrorist leaders, including foreigners who Puntlandia pursued in recent days,” he added.

“This action degrades even more the capacity of the IS to plan and carry out terrorist attacks that threaten US citizens, our innocent civilian allies and send a clear sign that the United States is always ready to find and eliminate terrorists that threaten our allies, “Hegseth said.
Islamic State has a relatively small presence in Somalia compared to Al Shabab, linked to the qaeda network, but experts have warned of a growing activity.
The Somali President’s officinal, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, issued a statement pointing out that he had been informed of US attacks. “The president recognizes the unwavering support of the United States in the fight against international terrorism and thanks the continuous commitment under the decisive leadership of President Donald Trump,” wrote the office of the Somali president in X (Twitter).
