In an interview with IANS, Chidanand Saraswati emphasized that true success is not in material achievements but in spiritual growth and emotional connection. Furthermore, he emphasized that unity is the essence of Sanatan Dharma.
Reflecting on the large number of people at the Maha Kumbh Mela, Saraswati compared the number of participants to the population of major cities in the world, such as Japan, Delhi and Shanghai. He was surprised that more than 5 million people flocked to the Sangam in just two days, placing Prayagraj at the center of the world at this auspicious time. He spoke passionately about the unifying power of the Kumbh and said, “There is no caste discrimination or division in the Maha Kumbh. Everyone’s heart is connected. When people reach the banks of the Sangam, they die. They get rid of their differences and The message is clear: unity is the essence of Sanatan Dharma.”
Saraswati further described the Maha Kumbh Mela as a symbol of the eternal spirit of Sanatan, which is inclusive, eternal and nourishing.
“Sanatan does not divide, he does not fear, he protects. “It is for everyone, whether they come or not,” he said.
The spiritual leader also urged the youth to embrace spirituality as a path to peace and prosperity. He praised the increasing number of educated youth visiting the Kumbh and noted that they are realizing that material success alone does not bring lasting satisfaction.
“The young people of India are beginning to understand that peace comes from within, from spirituality. Today’s world is driven by technology, but here people find their true connection in silence,” said Saraswati.

Saraswati also highlighted the global interest in Maha Kumbh, noting that countries like Pakistan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are among the most searched online for the term ‘Mahakumbh’. He attributed this to the universal appeal of the Kumbh, where divisions transcend and humanity unites in its quest for spiritual enlightenment.
In a powerful metaphor, Saraswati spoke of the Kumbh Mela as a place of encounter, not loss. “Maha Kumbh is not about getting lost, but about finding yourself. “It is about rediscovering what has been forgotten and realizing that even what is left behind has immeasurable value,” he said.
He also recognized the challenges of modern life, where distractions like smartphones and social media often divert attention from the deepest needs of the soul. “People do the ‘sadhna’ of the phone, but here in the Kumbh, people do the ‘sadhna’ of silence,” he joked.
The spiritual leader also reflected on the harmony between science and spirituality, praising India’s scientific achievements and urging the youth to balance their intellectual pursuits with their spiritual heritage.
He quoted S. Somanath, who expressed the need for both scientific research and spiritual depth.
“For outer space we need science, but for inner space we need spirituality,” Saraswati said.
He concluded with a call for unity, pointing out that the Maha Kumbh Mela is not just a religious gathering, but a movement that embodies the spirit of India: its culture, its values and its ancient traditions.
“This is the Kumbh, where arrogance disappears, where materialism is put aside and where we unite in the spirit of unity, peace and spiritual awakening.”
