US President Donald Trump. will sign executive orders on Monday that reverse gender- and sex-based initiatives enacted by the Biden administration and eliminate the federal government’s diversity programs, officials said before Trump’s inauguration.
The measures, advanced by a White House official, are a nod to issues that animated Trump’s campaign and that he has promised to address as president.
The first order would require agencies to treat biological men and women as separate sexes, stop promoting “gender ideology” and require certain agencies to return to recognizing only “man” and “woman” on forms.
For example, the State Department will now require passport and visa applicants to “accurately” reflect their sex on their official documents, the official said. And federal prisons and immigrant shelters will be required to protect “single-sex spaces,” the official said.
“What we are doing today is defining that it is a policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. “They are sexes that cannot be changed and are based on a fundamental and incontrovertible reality,” said the official.
Among the directives of the decree is the prohibition of using federal funds in transition procedures, the official said. And it will “ensure that Americans have their right to free speech,” which the official said could be hindered when “people are asked to use preferred pronouns.”
“The federal government will no longer promote gender ideology,” the official said.
A second executive order will end the government’s “radical and wasteful DEI programs,” the official said, using an acronym for diversity, equity and inclusion.
The executive order “will dismantle the DEI bureaucracy, and this includes environmental justice programs, equity-related grants, equity action plan, equity initiatives.”
“They are going to evaluate the cost to the taxpayer of all these programs and provide transparency to the public,” the official said.
