Trump also signed a series of measures to accelerate deportations, drastically stop the entry of immigrants through the southern border and reverse almost all the policies implemented by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
These measures include the declaration of a “national emergency” on the border with Mexico, a priority for the Republican president that was also key during his previous term. With this declaration, Trump will be able to access funds – without approval from Congress – and thus deploy resources, military and technology to the border. However, it is not clear how it will use armed forces for border security tasks.
Other measures included the reinstatement of the ‘Stay in Mexico’ policy, officially known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).
This policy, implemented during his first administration and continued for a time under the Biden administration, left more than 70,000 migrants stranded for months in Mexican border cities with high crime rates, while they waited to apply for asylum.
In the past, the measure was criticized not only for the trauma it caused thousands of migrants, but for being considered an unnecessary restriction on the right of people to request asylum when they arrive at the border.
‘Stay in Mexico’ leaves the CBP One application voidwith which the Biden government granted migrants in Mexico a limit of daily appointments to appear before a Border Patrol officer and begin their immigration process, if they met the requirements.

Furthermore, Trump ordered to rescind the processing of ‘humanitarian parole’ for Cuban, Nicaraguan, Haitian and Venezuelan citizens.
