The Trump government keeps 10 migrants suspected of belonging to criminal gangs in the same prison in Guantanamo, in Cuba, which has housed men accused of belonging to Al Qaeda, US defense officials said Wednesday.
The Pentagon made the revelation while the US forces prepare a city of tents for migrants, in compliance with an order of President Trump, in a separate part of the base. But the Department of Defense said that the first group of 10 deportees, who were taken to the base on Tuesday, were too dangerous for the migrant site.
Instead, they were located in a unemployed section of the military prison that houses suspects and convicted terrorism, far from the area where the National Security Department will retain other deportees.
On Wednesday, Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, said men were members of a Venezuelan band called Train de Aragua, to which last year the US government described as “transnational criminal organization” by human beings trafficking and other criminal acts. The band has its origins in a prison in Venezuela.
The US government has been recruiting migrants for a long time in Guantanamo, mainly Cubans and Haitians who have been collected in the sea. But war prisoners have always been away from migrants. Migrants are in custody of the Department of National Security. The alleged members of Al Qaeda are in custody of the Department of Defense.
