The president of the USA, Donald Trump, said he will announce a 25% tariff over all imports from the United States of steel and aluminum.
The main countries that would be affected by this new measure would be Canada, Brazil and Mexico, whose joint sales cover half of the steel that imports the US market, and Canada is also the largest aluminum supplier.
The US imported 28,858,000 net tons of steel in 2024, according to preliminary data from the Census Office, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The main volume came from Canada (6.56 million tons), Brazil followed (4.5 million tons), and thirdly Mexico (3.5 million tons), according to AISI’s report.
Other countries that covered that demand were South Korea (2.8 million tons), Vietnam (1.3 million tons) and Japan (1.1 million tons).
In addition, the US imported 5.4 million tons of aluminum in 2024, according to ITA, mainly from Canada (3.15 million tons, 58 % of the total imported by the US)
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, asked to maintain the “cold head” waiting for Trump’s announcement.
“We found out about the media publication. Let’s wait, it’s as I say: cold head. We are going to wait to see if today he announces something and from there we will take our definitions, ”said Sheinbaum at his daily conference on Monday.
The president also emphasized once again that the objective of her government is always collaborating, coordinating, and working together for the benefit of Mexico and the USA, “always respecting sovereignty,” he said.
Given the possibility that Trump specifies the aforementioned announcement, Brazil’s finance minister Fernando Haddad, said the economic team expects guidance from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on possible measures in response to those tariffs.
“To avoid doubts, the information that the Lula government should tax technology companies if the United States government imposes tariffs on Brazil is not correct. In addition, the Brazilian government made the sensible decision to express itself only in a timely manner based on concrete decisions and not on ads that could be misunderstood or reviewed, ”Haddad published in his X account.
Brazil exported more than 70 types of steel and aluminum products to the United States in 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services published by CNN Brazil.
In Spain, the Spanish Association of Aluminum and Surface Treatments (AEA), which represents more than 650 companies in the sector, called to keep calm and said it is “premature” to draw conclusions, according to the Europa Press agency.
