MYSTERIES

When mystery and chance blur your existence

The mystery, what we do not find a possible explanation and sometimes hides in the darkest part of people, is one of the pillars of Francisco Javier González Valdepeñas’s new novel. Professor Talaverano presents his new work, ‘The imperceptible grimace of chance’, published by October Black Editions, where in addition to mystery, luck or chance they play a main role since sometimes “chance dominates our existence.”

González Valdepeñas is an English teacher at the IES Gabriel Alonso de Herrera and medieval and Renaissance English literature tutor in the degree of English studies of the UNED associated center in Talavera.

The new book, the third in its short but productive career, will be presented this Friday, January 31 in the auditorium of the José Hierro Municipal Library, where it will feature the writer Benjamín Pulido Navas, friend and partner, as presenter.

The novel dissects the members of a family throughout three generations. Everyone hides something. Gerardo and Claudia are known fortuitously and access for different reasons to marry. Each one reaches this point of his life differently, the first with many deficiencies in his childhood but with the objective of studying Medina; She, on the other hand, lives intimidated from a young age.

Their daughters, Chiqui and Marta, live on the contrary a happy childhood thanks not to their parents but to their grandparents, who visit them regularly, and Andrea, who exercises the work of maid and lives with them.

In addition to the characters, there is another mystery, a closed room, frequented only by Gerardo and where no one knows what he hides. The daughters will discover their father’s great secret, but only after his death.

‘The imperceptible grimace of chance’ moves between the most hidden secrets and the circumstances that, fortuitously, are shaping or perhaps blurring, the life of dark characters that do not leave anyone indifferent.

In addition, it has been a finalist in the I edition of the LGTBIQ+ Subur Negre Awards, recognition that seeks to publicize and make visible the LGTBIQ+ social collective and its environment within the novelistic genre.

González Valdepeñas ‘last work, which once again has an original cover of Ángel José González Valdepeñas, painter and brother of the author, has just been published now but is written since 2021. Before, in 2018, he published his first novel’ The Secret of Sir Gawain. Reflections on love and death ‘, while in 2020 he was a finalist in the Vilertamen of a multiverse novel with the work’ My father ‘.
