Synopsis: WICKED follows the legendary witches of the world of Oz. Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood by the unusual color of her green skin, has no idea of the reach of her powers. His encounter at the University of Shiz, in the fantastic world of Oz, marks the beginning of an unlikely but deep friendship. With WICKED: Part 1Jon M. Chu addresses an ambitious adaptation of the famous Broadway musical, immersing the spectators in the colorful and exuberant world of the land of Oz, while exploring deep topics such as friendship, tolerance and acceptance of differences. Promoted by the interpretations of Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda), the extravagant aesthetic and the narrative of the film oscillate between the casual comedy and the moving drama. Although the first part of the film is a celebration for musical fans, it does not escape some of the imbalances that have divided criticism.
Jon M. Chu, known for his mastery of musicals(Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), uses a particularly rich artistic direction. The dazzling special effects and the bright color palette submerge the viewer in a fantastic world. One of the most shocking scenes is the dance in Ozdust, where Elphaba and Glindaafter the initial tensions, they find a common terrain to the rhythm of a sincerely moving choreography and full of nuances. This moment, in which Glinda voluntarily humbles himself to compensate for his teasing, is a moving demonstration of his incipient link.
Ariana Great surprises in his glinding interpretation, skillfully combining an almost caricaturesca comedy with moments of sincere emotion. His interpretation is hilarious, although sometimes a bit exaggerated, which can confuse some spectators. For its part, Cynthia Erivo It shines with its powerful voice and its introspective interpretation, instilling Elphaba an intensity that gives the movie with your emotional heart.
However, although WICKED: Part 1 It impresses with its technique, it suffers by its narrative breakup. With 2 hours and 40 minutes, the film runs the risk of losing part of its audience, especially families with children. This format, although generous, could benefit from a more tight pace, since some scenes are extended unnecessarily.
Another problem lies in the adaptation of songs to the Original subtitled version. The lyrics have been rewritten to adapt them to the language, which creates a dissonance for bilingual spectators who simultaneously follow text and music. This choice, although understandable from the artistic point of view, can be disconcerting.
The critic is divided around the film: some praise their faithful tribute to the original workwhile others regret their execution, sometimes too emphatic. The staging, although impressive, is judged by some as excessive, as well as the bright and omnipresent colors that saturate the screen. In spite of this, the moments of narrative intimacy, such as the exchanges between Elphaba and Glinda, manage to move deeply.
The film recalls the apogee of Hollywood musicals, but also tries to modernize the genre addressing contemporary issues. The message of acceptance of differences is sometimes Machacón to the detriment of subtlety, but the intention is laudable and universal.
WICKED: Part 1 It is a visual and emotionally rich show that will attract fans of musicals and fantastic stories. Although part of the duration and awkwardness of the film detract from the experience, it remains a felt celebration of the OZ universe and the ties that transcend the differences. With a second part yet to come, it remains to be seen if Jon M. Chu will harmonize his ambitions to offer a memorable conclusion.
