The Secretary of the State Department, Marco Rubio, questioned Mexico, during his confirmation speech this Wednesday, for its accommodative foreign policy regarding the crisis in Venezuela and the illegitimate inauguration of Nicolás Maduro.

“Mexico’s economy, in many ways, is very vibrant and has made tremendous progress and remains a very strong regional power,” he commented in the United States Senate.
However, the diplomat acknowledged that “sometimes they can be frustrating for us because they have enshrined, even in their Constitution, a kind of non-aligned and non-interventionist foreign policy with respect to some of the abuses.”
“That is why it has been disappointing, for example, to see the position they have adopted with respect to Venezuela and other countries,” he concluded.
Both the current president Claudia Sheinbaum and her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have maintained a distanced and indifferent position to the abuses of Chavismo.
