United States revokes extension of protections to Venezuelans, according to the NY Times

The Trump administration has revoked an extension of deportation protections that the previous government granted more than 600,000 Venezuelans They were already in the United States, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, based on a copy of the decision.

The Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, rescinded a measure of the Biden government to grant Venezuelans in the United States 18 additional months of deportation extension and access to work permits through the temporary protection status program (TPS, for its acronym in English), according to the New York Times.

President Donald Trump, Republican, assumed the position on January 20 and promised to take measures against illegal immigration and humanitarian programs that, according to him, go beyond the intention of US law. Trump tried to end most of the registrations in the TPS during his first term, but the federal courts prevented him.

The TPS is available for people whose country of origin has suffered a natural disaster, an armed conflict or other extraordinary event. The former president Joe Biden, a Democrat, greatly expanded the program and now covers more than one million people from 17 countries.

The Secretary of National Security of Biden, Alejandro Mayorkas, issued the extension for Venezuela a week and a half before Trump took possession, despite the fact that the existing protections for Venezuelans did not expire until April for some registered and until September for others. He also extended the TPS for people from El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan.

The New York Times reported that the revocation of the extension by Noem forces him to have decided on Saturday what to do with the protections that expire in April or make them automatically renew for six months.

The United States National Security Department did not respond immediately to a request for comments.
